Estimating abortion costs, by Tess Braunstein

Estimating the cost of abortion services can be a stressful process, and one made even more difficult when prices are not easily available. Providing information about abortion costs helps people assess their options in a timely manner and make decisions accordingly. This is particularly important when it comes to determining one’s options, as certain medicines and procedures are time-sensitive.

Finestra was founded on the principle of bringing price transparency to health care in the United States. Our search engine gives users the power to view and compare prices at hospitals in their area - for free. The pricing data from private clinics within this report are being integrated into our database, which currently contains information for hosptials in both the greater New York City area as well as in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Abortion pricing in New York City

A survey of independent clinics in New York City conducted in July 2022 provides up-to-date pricing information about the costs of the abortion pill and the costs of the surgical abortion. The following reported pricing estimates reflect out-of-pocket costs for those who are uninsured or choose not to use insurance.

Can patients travel to New York for an abortion?

Abortion is legal and protected in New York, and those seeking to travel to New York State and New York City can access care there. Abortion services are available up to 24 weeks in New York, depending on the clinic. People need to be able to quickly access up-to-date and accurate information about abortion services and the potential costs incurred in order to make informed choices for themselves.

While New York has many trustworthy clinics where people can access abortion services, it is necessary for people to be able to recognize fake clinics, also known as Crisis Pregnancy Centers. These are often strategically located near legitimate clinics and can provide misleading, inaccurate, and potentially harmful information to people trying to access care. Those searching for abortion clinics in New York State can use this map as a guide to determining which clinics provide legitimate reproductive health care.

Abortion pill pricing

The abortion pill usually involves taking two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. The medications are more effective the sooner they are taken, so those seeking a medication abortion should do so as quickly as possible. This option is generally available up to 7-10 weeks, although some clinics may provide the medications at an earlier point.

New York State also allows the abortion pill to be prescribed via telemedicine. Those searching for telehealth platforms that provide the pill can search for these services here and here. Some physical clinics offer walk-in services for the abortion pill as well.

  • Lowest price: $375
  • Average price: $563
  • Highest price: $675

Surgical abortion pricing - D&C/Aspiration(10-14 weeks)

The most common surgical abortion procedures are dilation and curettage (D&C) or sometimes vacuum aspiration (also known as suction aspiration or MVA). These options are generally available from 10-14 weeks depending on the provider. Some clinics only offer one of the in-clinic abortion methods, and people who are interested in this option should verify the type that is offered with their provider and the weeks up until which the procedure can be performed.

  • Lowest price: $420
  • Average price: $544
  • Highest price: $750

Surgical abortion pricing - D&E (13-24 weeks)

For 15 weeks and above, the dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedure is used, although this varies by provider and the surgical capacities of the clinics. Some clinics offer D&E as early as 12 weeks. Other clinics can provide abortions up to and including 24 weeks. Those seeking second trimester abortion services should verify the options available at their chosen clinic and ask about whether they may need to be referred elsewhere.

12-14 weeks

  • Lowest price: $500
  • Average price: $624
  • Highest price: $950

15 weeks

  • Lowest price: $850
  • Average price: $915
  • Highest price: $980

23-24 weeks

  • Lowest price: $1850
  • Average price: $2855
  • Highest price: $3280

Prices in the survey were not given for all clinics that offer D&E procedures above 15 weeks. However, the pricing at clinics that offer abortion services beyond this point is generally a $100-$200 increase for each additional week of pregnancy through 19 weeks. After 20 weeks, the procedure is more complicated, and so the pricing increases more, and may include a cremation fee.

Most clinics will include a pregnancy test as part of the initial visit, but common extra charges may include sonograms, rhogam injections, additional medications, outside lab fees, and follow-up visits.
